Young learners are in for a few surprises with the launch of two new interactive CD-ROMS designed to develop basic skills for 3-5 year olds from Sherston (Stand M50) at The Education Show 2006. Bringing a well-loved theme right up to date, Young MacDonald’s Farm is a modern take on a traditional story, with Old MacDonald’s daughter now in the tractor’s driving seat and running the farm her way. Children will meet singing strawberries, exotic chickens and a Patchwork Pig as they work through the activities. In Here’s Splodge, the endearing Splodge, a bright blue paint splat, leads young users through a host of adventures in friendly settings in a bid to find his friends, who have been on the receiving end of the mischievous antics of one Peter Paintbrush.
Young MacDonald’s Farm provides a fresh twist to a familiar scenario, with a line-up of quirky characters including Wonky the donkey, Goo the goose and Minty the sheep playing hide-and-seek as part of a regular day on this unconventional farm. The text-free program features appealing graphics offering activities with either visual or auditory focus on three levels, providing young users with basic skills as well as increased perception of the world around them.
Children are gently introduced to a range of cross-curricular challenges in Here’s Splodge. Activities based on ICT, maths and science encourage the development of problem solving, prediction and modeling skills as users engage in tasks including mending the toy-making machine, decorating Panda’s cake and creating the correct sequence to blow Billy Boat across the water tray. Text-free and fully narrated, the six activities each have two levels of difficulty. Teachers can choose between adventure and activity modes and there are simple teacher options.
Jamie Bayliss, Sherston’s Commercial Director, said: “Both these programs combine exciting graphics and engaging activities with the serious business of learning. Young children are gradually introduced to basic skills by working through the levels and on completion will have acquired a range of abilities that will set them up for future development.”
Both Young MacDonald’s Farm and Here’s Splodge are available from £39.95 for a single user version (ex VAT). Visit www.sherston.com for further information. As with all Sherston products, Young MacDonald’s Farm and Here’s Splodge are available to schools on 21 days free approval.
